The Sunflower Snuggler. A story of support and silent hugs

 

Finding the right words for a friend who is going through a loss is nearly impossible. You want to help and show you are there but everything you say feels too small or empty. It is a heavy feeling when you see someone you care about in pain and you just stand there with open hands.

When we experience a deep loss we often pull away from words and noise. We need something quiet and soft to hold onto when the world feels like it is falling apart. Standard gifts like flowers die in a week and cards usually end up in a drawer. People need a lasting symbol of light that doesn't demand anything from them but offers comfort during the long nights.

I created the Sunflower Snuggler for these exact moments. In many cultures the sunflower is a symbol of hope because it always turns its head toward the light even on cloudy days. One of my customers once asked me to make this toy for a friend who had lost her child. She didn't want to give a typical stuffed animal. She wanted something flat and soft that her friend could keep close as a silent hug.

Why a snuggler is different from a regular toy. My Giant Snugglers have no stuffing in the body. They are flat and very soft which makes them feel more like a security blanket than a doll. The power of handmade support. Making something with your own hands for someone in grief is a form of meditation. As you work on each stitch you are thinking of that person.
