Have you ever wondered how a simple hobby can evolve into a lifelong mission? My journey started with a single crochet hook and a ball of yarn. For years, I expressed my creativity through stitches, creating soft friends for children. But as time went on, I felt a calling to do something more. I wanted my toys to speak, to teach, and to share the rich heritage of my homeland, Ukraine. Today, I want to take you on the journey of how I became an independent author on Amazon, moving from the physical world of crochet to the imaginative world of storybooks.
The First Stitch of an Idea The transition wasn't immediate. It began with Sunny the Sunflower. As I designed his pattern, I started imagining his personality. He wasn't just a sunflower; he was a resilient, cheerful character who deeply loved his traditions. I realized that while a toy provides comfort, a story provides a legacy. I wanted children who hugged my toys to also know the stories behind them. This led me to my first major project: documenting my designs and my stories for a global audience.
The Leap into Publishing with Amazon KDP Being an independent author is both a challenge and a beautiful freedom. Using Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) allowed me to bypass traditional barriers and speak directly to you—my community.
My first technical book, "Crochet Lovey Patterns: 5 Giant Amigurumi Snugglers", was born from the desire to empower other makers. I wanted to share the exact blueprints for the snugglers that have brought so much joy to my own family. Seeing my patterns transformed into a professional book was a milestone, but it was only the beginning of my author journey.
Finding a Voice for Ukraine As a Ukrainian creator, I felt a profound responsibility to share our culture. This is how the "Sunny the Sunflower" series emerged. Writing "Sunny’s Vyshyvanka" was an emotional experience. I had to find a way to explain the significance of our embroidered shirts to a child in a way that felt magical and universal.
Becoming an author meant learning new skills: storytelling, pacing, working with illustrators, and understanding the needs of bilingual families. The result was my Bilingual Edition, which allows parents to teach Ukrainian and English side-by-side. You can follow the daily "behind-the-scenes" of my writing and designing process on my Instagram
The Synergy of Two Worlds What makes my journey unique is the synergy between the toy and the book. When I am crocheting, I am thinking about plot points. When I am writing, I am thinking about the tactile feel of the character. For me, the hook and the pen are two tools serving the same purpose: to create a world of warmth and tradition for the next generation.
Independent publishing has allowed me to keep my "Ukrainian soul" in every product. I don't have to compromise on the details of the embroidery patterns or the cultural nuances of the story. Every word in my books is mine, and every stitch in my patterns is tested by my own hands.
Advice for Aspiring Creators If you are a maker who has a story to tell, my advice is simple: start. Your perspective is unique, and in the age of digital publishing, there are no limits to how far your voice can travel. I started as a girl with a crochet hook in Ukraine, and today, my books are on bookshelves in homes across the world.
It hasn't always been easy, but every time I see a photo of a child reading my book while holding a toy they (or their parents) made from my pattern, I know that every hour of work was worth it.
What’s Next? The journey of an author never truly ends. I am already dreaming up new adventures for Sunny and new patterns for my fellow crocheters. My goal is to create a library of Ukrainian-inspired stories that provide comfort, education, and pride for years to come.
I invite you to explore my journey and my creations through my Amazon Author Page. Whether you are here for the yarn or the stories, thank you for being a part of my dream.
